The recent news that a young mother, who started the menopause at 29 and suffered needlessly because of a lack of specialist care in Wales, highlights an uncomfortable situation. It was reported that Helen Owen, from Wrexham, went into surgical menopause after a hysterectomy due to endometriosis. With no dedicated specialist clinic available in her local area to offer support or treatment, she was quoted as saying that she was “placed on anti-anxiety medication and left to get on with it”.
If Ms Owen had been able to access the expertise within a specialist clinic, she could have been supported by a menopause specialist with the knowledge and confidence to prescribe her a form of HRT or other suitable treatment. Do you offer this specialist knowledge in your practice? By arming yourself with the knowledge to identify the right menopause treatment, you could change the lives of women going through menopause.
